BOOK FAIR WEEK: WHY DO WE READ?

A Book Fair is always a fun way to get people excited about reading. This week, we organised a book fair in our secondary school, and this got us thinking. Why do people read?

To kick off the Book Fair, we asked some of our students why they love reading, their responses are in the picture above. However, please keep reading to see other reasons why we read...

Why Do We Read?

1.  Increases knowledge about a subject matter.

Reading about the mistakes and experiments of others in your field of interest increases your subject matter in that field.

2.  Reading opens up the mind, and makes us more creative.

While reading non-fiction is helpful with gathering knowledge on a particular subject matter, reading fiction helps you think about what is being read, and form opinions on it.

3.  Reading breeds success

Reading aids self-improvement, and successful people are always improving themselves.

4.  Reading stimulates the brain

According to Joseph Addison, "Reading is to the mind, what exercise is to the body". There are recent studies that imply that reading helps you get smarter.

5.  Reading broadens your vocabulary, and makes you a better writer

The more you read, the more words you'll meet. Therefore, when you intent to write, you'll have more words, and better writing styles.

6.  Reading helps your conversational skills

The knowledge gained from reading gives you something to share when in a conversation, and it also helps you articulate what you intend to say.

These are a few of the reasons why we read, please feel free to add to this list with reasons of your own in the comments box below.

All students and teachers donated books to the book fair, and the only currency needed at the fair was... YOU GUESSED IT! JUST BOOKS! To get a book from the fair, all you have to do is drop one in its stead.

Please enjoy our Book Fair Week, and feel free to donate books to the fair.
