5 Ways Parents Can Get Involved in the Prevention of Bullying in School

Bullying in school can have very serious consequences, and CEDEC International Schools has a Zero Tolerance to bullying of any form. In addition to having a Code of Conduct and an Anti-Bullying Policy, other ways we prevent bullying include creating a positive school environment, the content and delivery of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum, Anti-Bullying programmes and parental involvement, amongst others.

Today, we will be looking at 5 ways that parents can get involved in the prevention of bullying in schools.

1.    Empower Your Children

One way to empower children against bullying is to ensure they understand what bullying means, looks like, and feels like. Teach them about what to do when they encounter a bully. Strategies like walking away, reporting to an adult and speaking up for themselves should be explained in detail to the child. In addition to these, teach them that they must report it, and they should not be passive bystanders when they witness bullying.

2.    Teach Healthy Practices

An anti-bullying mindset is a healthy mindset to instill in a child. In addition to teaching them not to pinch, shove, hit, tease or hurt others, you should teach them to be non-judgemental, avoid making hurtful jokes, and spreading rumours about others. Also teach healthy habits online to prevent cyber bullying.

3.    Learn to Recognise the Warning Signs

Children might not be able to tell anyone if they have been bullied, so it is often helpful to learn these signs for yourself. They include seclusion, sudden unexplainable change in routine or hygiene, decline in grades, and mood changes. Please note that these might be indicators of other things also.

4.    Be familiar with School Policies

Get to know your child’s school more, learn about how discipline is reported and handled in the school. Policies help to know which person to call in the event of suspected bullying, and how you can get involved.

5.    Get Involved

It is important to be involved in creating an anti-bullying environment in the school. Volunteer during Anti-Bullying week, donate anti-bullying posters to the school, and offer to help during anti-bullying events.
